What have we found out so far in UKMACS?

This page gives a list of presentations and publications that relate to the study.

UKMACS Interview Study

In 2018 we interviewed 69 applicants to medical school and first year medical students. They were from all different social backgrounds, and from all around the UK. **Thank you to all the applicants and medical students who took part!**

We wanted to find out how applicants’ social background affects which medical schools they apply to. We also wanted to find out which information applicants from different backgrounds used in making their choices, and whether applicants’ future career aspirations affect their choice of medical schools to apply to.

Eliot Rees presented this poster “Does applicant speciality ambition influence medical school choice?” at the British Journal for General Practice Research Conference 2019 :

Eliot Rees presented “Medical school choice among applicants from different social backgrounds: A national qualitative interview study in the United Kingdom” at the ASME Annual Scientific Meeting in Glasgow July 2019.

UKMACS Applications and Outcomes Study

Throughout 2019 and 2020 we will be analysing data from the UK Medical Education Database on UK medical school applications from 2007 to 2017 (UKMED project ID UKMEDP089).

David Harrison presented a poster entitled “Medical School choices and selection outcomes in the UK: a retrospective study using administrative data” at the ASME Annual Scientific Meeting in Glasgow in July 2019.

UKMACS Questionnaire

In April 2020 nearly 3000 medical applicants completed a UKMACS COVID-19 questionnaire, which asked about their experiences during the lockdown and their views on medical school selection given the cancellation of examinations and school and university closures. The results of this study were presented to the Medical Schools Council Selection Alliance on 6th May 2020 and a pre-print article can be found here: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.06.02.20116855v1 . We will now submit this article to a peer-reviewed journal.

In September 2019 at the BERA annual conference, David Harrison presented a paper looking at how applicants decide on which medical school to apply to entitled “Are medical school applicants passive consumers or active users?” using some of the data from the UKMACS questionnaire to explore how applicants use information to select medical schools.
